Pomegranate in India-

India is one of the leading countries in pomegranate acreage and production worldwide. The area under pomegranate cultivation is around 2.20 lac ha with total production of around 27.95 lac tones with productivity of 12.70 MT/ ha.  Maharashtra contributes to around 90% of total production. Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh have also begun growing their market share.

Known as a ‘drought tolerant’ crop, pomegranate or â€˜anar fruit’ is native to Iran. Once they start fruiting they continue to give good yield for next decade. Hence it is one of the most widely grown commercial fruits in India. Globally, India is the leading producer of pomegranates. In India, pomegranates are commercially cultivated in Maharashtra. They are planted on a smaller scale in states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The area under pomegranate cultivation is around 2.20 lac ha with total production of around 27.95 lac tones with productivity of 12.70 MT/ ha.  Various varieties like Ganesh, Bhagawa, Araka, Ruby etc are commercially grown. The size of fruit ranges from 200-400 gms.

Extra class

Pomegranate in this class must be of superior quality. They must have the shape, development and colouring that are typical of the variety and/or commercial type. They must be free of defects, with the exception of very slight superficial defects, provided these do not affect the general appearance of the produce, the quality, the keeping quality and presentation in the package.

Class I

Pomegranates in this class must be of good quality. They must be characteristics of the variety and/or commercial type. The following slight defects may be allowed, provided these do not affect the general appearance of the produce, the quality, the keeping quality and presentation in the package. 
- a slight defect in shape. 
- a slight defect in colouring; 
- slight skin defects(i.e. scratches,scars,scraps and blemishes) not exceeding 5% of the total surface area

Class II

This class includes pomegranates which do not qualify for inclusion in higher classes, but satisfy the minimum requirements. Following defects may be there provided the pomegranates retain their essential characteristics as regard the quality, the keeping quality and presentation: 
- defects in shape; 
- defects in colouring 
- skin defects(i.e., scratches ,scars, scrapes and blemishes), not exceeding 10% of the total surface area
